From my photo archive, shot in November 2011
I shoot a lot of everything day to day, I realised I haven’t really got any of my sport photography on my site. Last year, before going freelance, I was commissioned by the Daily Mirror to photograph boxer Carl Froch training before going to the World Super Six Series in Atlantic city.
It was a press call at the English Institute of Sport. A great venue, but as with many indoor sport venue, the lighting can be a bit of photo challenge. To solve this I used a lot of off camera flash, and just a few available light shots to create striking images with as few distractions as possible (given how busy these things can get, and with time limitations it’s no mean feat).
My favourite image of the set is the one of Carl mid squat during his training (TOP IMAGE). Shot through the boxing ring rope I quite like the composition, of the horizontal lines, broken up by Carl in the centre.
If you’re an editor or work in the sports world and would like to commission me for something similar, give me a call on 07901 617571 or email jp@jonathanpow.com
