I’m sure some of you will have seen this video. I was videographer / director / features photographer for Barcroft Media’s Barcroft Cars channel.
I’ve worked with Barcroft Media for a few years now. Shooting video and features photography for their stories, which are often seen by millions in newspapers, magazines, and web viewers around the world.
They call on me because I shoot both video and photography, I’m told pretty well. It’s a juggling act, takes a lot of time, but I quite enjoy it. It just requires a slightly different approach to photography.
With features photography you have to tell a story, ensuring you cover all the important bits visually. You have to shoot it well, concentrating on lighting (artificial or natural) as well remembering to always get the best from the subject. With videography it’s this, multiplied by about ten. When you need one photograph for the magazine or newspaper, you’ll need about 5 or 6 different clips of the same thing for video. All that, plus interviews, pieces to cameras, setting up and breaking down, it can take a fair bit of time. Definitely not a ten minute job.
The with Scott and KITT day was great fun. We spent a fair bit in a garage, getting video footage and stills of the car workshop setting. Then headed out onto the road, into Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, to see people’s reactions. It was bloody amazing. It’s fantastic how many people recognise it and it’s one hell of a head turner. The highlight of the day was when we found a disused parking lot, the lights in the dark looked fantastic and the sound of the engine was immense.
The video was shot on a Nikon D800 and the stills on a Nikon D3S. I spend a lot of time juggling gear on these photo shoots. Clamping the camera to the car for the moving shots was pretty nerve wracking (that’s definitely to be revised for the next shoot!). The results I’m pretty pleased with though.
